Our feet are happy to be home in slippers but what a weekend we had in the city by the bay. We left our soles in San Francisco and took home some blisters!

Final Week

Okay, we are 4 days away from the big walk. I am wondering how I can walk 20 miles a day. I think packing a camera is a good idea and I will pretend I am a tourist. That should get me through 5 miles. Chocolate at the end would lure me on also. The big question becomes how do I get up and do it the next day again! I took Bear on a four mile walk yesterday. It took one hour and fifteen minutes - now multiply by 5 and there you have it 20 miles! Feet don't fail me now.
I think we should all come with topics for discussion...but of course since I have experienced difficult walks before there will be no discussing politics!

The Route

The Route
The route is well marked with arrows and instructional signage; simply follow the signs and the walkers in front of you! Here's a general description of what you will experience along the way:

On Day One, after exiting Cow Palace you will make your way through Daly City on the way to the coast into San Francisco. After a brief walk around Lake Merced, the route will head north into the Sunset area and eventually up to and through the heart of Golden Gate Park. Upon leaving the park you will head north through some of San Francisco’s most beautiful neighborhoods including Pacific Heights. The route continues north and ends for the day along the water at camp.

You will begin Saturday's journey by heading uphill to the famous Golden Gate Bridge. After crossing the two mile span, you will head down to the famous Fort Baker. The route continues high above the water into Sausalito and into the picturesque downtown area. Then you will head north on the San Francisco Bay trail into artsy Mill Valley. After passing through the heart of downtown Mill Valley you will return to the Bay Trail to head south after lunch. The route will pass through the lovely Sausalito before returning to Fort Baker and heading back over the Golden Gate Bridge to camp.

The final day of the journey will travel to the heart of San Francisco. The day begins along the water and onto famous Lombard St. A brief walk uphill will show off amazing views of the city skyline. Then you will head back down into Golden Gate Park and get a chance to visit the famous Haight-Ashbury area. After lunch, head east towards City Hall and the War Memorial. You will pass through the famous shopping district of San Francisco before experiencing Chinatown and Little Italy. The last few miles of the route show off several of the city’s iconic monuments before heading into Fort Mason for the Closing Ceremony.

Women We Support

When we were camping Karene had just found out her sister, Wendy, has breast cancer. One of Wendy's thoughts was she needed to get her hair cut so she would be able to give her long hair to "Locks of Love". They cannot accept it once you start chemo which because of the spread of the cancer she was fast tracked.....so we are walking in support of her.
At quilting my friend Barbara shared that her sister-in-law's breast cancer is back after ten years. They fly out Friday to be with her because she has to have a mastectomy.
I will walk to support these women but I would love for this list to stop growing.
Do daily breast exams and get your mammograms.

Big heat, big walks...

The Fresno crew went for a little walk like everyone else this past weekend and we went through all the possible terrains you could think of... fields, houses, parks, restaurant parking lots, you name it- we walked through it to get our miles in.

Had to stop towards the end for refreshments :)

19 Miles in 90+ degree weather

Mom and I went for our 18 mile walk in Bakersfield yesterday. We started at 5:45am to beat the heat...we lost that battle :o) It was HOT! We started from our house and walked to Starbucks (mile 3) to get our morning pick me up. From there we headed East then made a big circle to end up on the bluffs overlooking the beautiful oil fields. This was our beautiful view... Our plan was to walk to the end of a park along the bluffs but we had to take a small detour to find a restroom. Apparently, Bakersfield does not support restrooms in public areas. So our 18 mile walk turned into 19! The last two miles were miserable with the temperature reaching 95ish. All we could think about was the swimming pool. But boy did the refreshing water feel great!
Trish, our walk was not as scenic as yours! But we are looking forward to seeing all the great landmarks in a couple of weeks!!!

Training Walks

Well I got in a training walk yesterday. Tom and I went to San Francisco and parked at pier 3 (near the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge). We then proceeded to walk to the Golden Gate Bridge along the Bay Trail. We could of swore there and back was 12 to 14 miles - but no - 11 MILES is all!! The walk was beautiful. The morning started very foggy and windy - fog, the type where you feel the mist on you. Tourist every where with newly purchased San Francisco sweatshirts and jackets filled this route. The trail passes Pier 39, Fisherman Wharf, Aquatic Park, the Marina, Crissy Field, and ends at Ft. Point (one of the only Civil War forts built on the west coast) underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. After touring the fort and grabbing lunch at the warming hut on Crissy Fields back we trooped to the Bay Bridge. The sun broke through and even Alcatraz looked good. This route will definitely be on the 3 day because we end up for the closing ceremonies at the marina. How could you have a 3 day and not view these sites. I just cannot figure out how they get us from the Cow Palace there...? It was a great morning and got me excited about the walk and walking with all of you.
I hear everyone else had longer walks - lets hear about them valley girls!!

Introducing Me! (Jessica)

Ok so I will finally post and let everyone know all about me! I am almost 30 (Yikes) and this will be my 2nd walk but 3rd in terms of fundraising. For some reason I am better at fundraising than walking, ha ha. I have somehow conned some friends and co-workers to join us this year in San Fran so I think this year will be a lot of fun!
Training here in the Valley is always tough because of the heat. This week we are over 100 degrees and up to 110 maybe! Although we have been trying to walk in the mornings, it is still almost 80 by 6am!! So needless to say I have put some blood and sweat into this walk! (the blood is from running into a few wild bushes on training walks)
I can't wait though, the count down has begun. T Minus 9 weeks until the official walk! GO team Final Final

Introducing Scott

I am husband and supporter of two time walker Megs. I have to do an occasional foot rub and wear the shirts my wife makes for me :-)

Saturday, May 31, 2008

Introducing Jenn

Hope the rest of the team takes a moment to introduce themselves as well!

I am almost 30 years old and living in Lemoore, CA. I came to the valley to ride horses for Fresno State and have stayed here for more than 10 years.

Originally from the east bay I am glad to be heading back there for this walk. I am looking forward to cooler breezes and great views. Although the possibility for hills is a bit daunting, there are no hills in Fresno :)

My husband Jamison is a teacher at the local school and also a track coach- you would think he would keep me motivated but I am the one having to drag him out to walk with me and Lily our dog :)

I work in advertising sales- quite enjoyable and it gives me the means to follow my passion for horses.

I will be walking with tons of family in September- twin sister, mom, aunt, cousins and grandmother.

Melting!!!

Is anyone else having problems walking in the heat? I think it is time to move the walks into my pool :)

Hopefully the 100 degree heat moves along and we get back to the nice 80's soon.

Inspiration

So if anyone hasn't noticed, I have been missing in action this year thus far. To be honest, I have been so busy with school that I was thinking about not walking. The thought of having to fundraise and train was overwhelming me and I wondered if I could do it one more year. That was until I got a phone call from my closest friend from college. She is getting married this summer and I assumed it would be a discussion about her wedding plans. It wasn't. She told me that her mother had found a lump in her breast and that she was going to have a mastectomy in the next week. After the surgery, the doctor diagnosed her with stage two breast cancer and she started chemotherapy the following week. My friend spoke about having mixed feelings. Part of her was completely devastated that her mother has breast cancer while the other part reached for some bit of relief that it was not stage three or four. Everything that I am going through right now, compares nothing to what her and her family is going through. It made me think about why I decide to do the 3 Day in 2006. I didn't want someone to go have to go through what my friends mother, and my friend for that matter, is going through. So with that, I am walking again, in support of those who are fighting breast cancer, in honor of those who have survived breast cancer, and in memory of those who have passed because of breast cancer. I am walking for you.

Morning training walks

For the crazy few who are early risers- I am joining your ranks.

Denise, the owner of the barn where I board my horse is keeping me company on our early morning walks around the neighbors walnut orchard- roughly 2 miles around, we enjoy some of the prettiest scenery at 6:30 in the morning.

We are also in good company with Delila, Mikey, Snickers, Roxanne, Scruffy and my Lily who are running circles around us and making sure there are no crazy squirrels or chippys in the surrounding trees.

Walk blog

Just thought this might be fun since we can't post that many pictures on our personal donation pages for the walk. This way we can post pictures from the last few years and some of the stories for people to check out and ask questions about.

Now why aren't all the team members showing up on the team page? Laura, Megan and Mom? Have you switched over yet?
